Understanding Microdermabrasion

What is microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a type of exfoliation of the skin. It is sort of like a “sand blasting” the skin using tiny crystals in a self contained unit. A specialist will apply these tiny crystals to your skin with a special machine, and then vacuums them back up with the same machine. This helps exfoliate the top layer of your skin. The specialist will adjust the amount of suction and crystal usage based on the client’s skin.

The small crystals I’ve mentioned are made of different materials. They can be made of aluminum dioxide, sodium chloride or corundum. When these crystals go against the skin, they help remove the dead skin cells that are on the top layer of your skin. It can be used on all skin types, though it must be adjusted for people with sensitive skin. When it comes to skin care, this is a method which is good for sun damaged skin, skin with acne scarring, fine lines, and also coarse skin.

Why do we want to exfoliate our skin? Your skin is constantly turning, and as we get older, this becomes a slower process. By leaving the older layers of skin on top, we have a dull and aged appearance. Exfoliating your skin, or gently removing that layer of dead skin cells allows your fresher skin to be exposed, which gives you that “glow” or a healthier appearance. There are many ways to exfoliate your skin, microdermabrasion being one of them.

While we can do mild exfoliation at home with gentle scrubs or with chemical enzymes, you can opt to go to a spa, medi-spa or dermatologist for other methods of exfoliation. This is a surface procedure, and isn’t a deep exfoliation. You can usually have this done at a local spa. As with any procedure like this, be sure to use your sunscreen regularly, so that your newly exposed skin doesn’t become damaged.

Like everything, you’ll want to consider contraindications. You don’t want to use microdermabrasion on a client with Rosacea, a client on Accutane, a diabetic who may wound easily, or someone with inflamed acne.

Exfoliation is an excellent way to freshen up your look. Your skin will have a radiant glow, along with a smoother surface for make-up application. If you’ve been thinking your skin is looking a bit dull or rough lately, maybe it’s time to try microdermabrasion. It’s amazing what a difference exfoliation makes.

Like any procedure you may think about having, be sure that the person operating the microdermabrasion machine is licensed. Feel free to ask them how many times they’ve performed the procedure and ask any questions you may have. During the procedure, you’ll be able to let them know if you need the flow of crystals adjusted if you’re uncomfortable. Most people don’t request that, and may ask for it stronger. If you’re a client thinking that stronger is better, trust your skin care specialist to know what is best, as you don’t want to damage your skin by being too aggressive.

If you are the one performing the procedure, always make sure you have a signed consent form before starting.

Several health experts think that this process is pretty safe because it is not counted to be a surgical function. It serves to give somebody younger and softer skin that is free of their the scars. It operates by polishing off the top level of the skin that is dead. This will induce the output of collagen. Cons Of Microdermabrasion

Commonly the cons of microdermabrasion for acne is small as long as a certified skin care professional is the one doing the procedure. Having it performed someplace that is inexpensive and is not sterile is a big risk because it is more likely that the materials utilised are poor quality and will be used improperly.

Utilizing instruments that are not clean can stimulate infections. If the machine that is utilized is not put at the right setting there is a high chance that the patient’s skin will be pierced by the fine crystals that are usually utilized to help the skin to exfoliate.

While these disadvantages are rare they may still come about if the process is not executed the right way. That is why it is important to utilise somebody who is qualified and has gotten good reviews from other patient’s.

Microdermabrasion – Skin Improvement Technologies

Microdermabrasion is a ventilation technique for the skin that helps repair facial tissue that has perhaps taken a beating from the sun and other effects of aging. A plastic surgeon will perform this technique and will use a device that is not unlike a fine sandblaster to spray tiny crystals over the face. They will then mix gentle abrasion with suction to remove the dead and outer layer of skin. As with other skin renewal procedures, more than one session may be required in order to reduce and remove fine wrinkles and/or unwanted pigmentation.

Microdermabrasion is a good choice for skin improvement technologies because there are virtually no side effects. The benefits however, include the following: it gives the skin an overall fresh and healthy-looking glow, it is non surgical which means it is a safe, effective and quick procedure. Microdermabrasion is effective on all skin colors and types, and there is no anesthetic required. It is also ]excellent for skin that may be sensitive to other chemical procedures because this is such a gentle technique. Unlike with complicated cosmetic surgeries, there is no “rest” period involved, therefore normal activities can begin at once.

There are several things that you should consider before going ahead with this procedure however. It might be cost consuming since you will most likely need multiple sessions in order to see results and to maintenance them. The best results occur on patients with pale or fair skin tone will show best results, so if you are darker in pigmentation, you should consult with a professional first. As well as these important considerations, after the treatment, your Doctor or Surgeon might want to recommend an individualized skin care program in order to maximize results, which might prove to be costly or not time efficient enough for your lifestyle.

If you do decide that Microdermabrasion is right for you, congratulations. There are many skin problems that this procedure can help, reduce or cure such as signs of prematurely aging skin including fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, acne, acne scarring, and enlarged pores. Microdermabrasion gets rid of dull, lackluster skin which gives you a more youthful appearance.

Some people should not use Microdermabrasion process so make sure you let your doctor know if you have or have had in the past any of the following conditions. Undiagnosed lesions, herpes outbreaks, warts, stage 3 or 4 acne, rosacea, unstable diabetes, or any autoimmune disorders.

Microdermabrasion Stretch Mark Reduction

December 28, 2009 by admin

Microdermabrasion has revolutionised they in which stretch marks are managed. This procedure has been shown to decrease the appearance of those unwanted marks. Ladies and gentlemen, please continue reading to understand how this can be achieved.

The formation of stretch marks:

At present, there is a common misnomer that they also known as striae distensae) arise due to the overstretching of skin which is associated with pregnancy and growth spurts. However, this is untrue and the scientific reason behind the formation of these is based upon the high blood circulating levels of glucocorticoids (hormones) which are secreted by the adrenal glands. The adrenal glands are situated bilaterally and are found on top of the upper pole of the kidney.

Glucocorticoids tend to be released in excess during pregnancy, obesity, weight lifting and Cushing’s disease. Striae distensae can also arise due to the chronic oral intake of steroids (such as prednisolone) which propel the formation of these unwanted marks on the skin. Topical steroid creams have also been proven to initiate the formation of these marks and in some cases, frequent use should be avoided.

Fibroblasts are cells that are involved in laying down collagen (connective tissue) in skin tissue so that the skin remains strong and possess an adequate degree of elasticity. During the normal skin cycle, fibroblasts lay down collagen to replace what is lost from the skin; this is called physiological skin remodelling. This process also occurs when skin is injured; fibroblasts lay down collagen to bridge the gap between cracked skin, eventually allowing the collagen to amalgamate with normal skin, hence forming a continuum.

Unfortunately, when circulating blood levels of glucocorticoids are high, the fibroblasts are inhibited thus inhibiting the normal remodelling of skin. Ultimately, this leads to the decreased thickness of skin with abnormal or lack of collagen deposits in the skin resulting in the formation of stretch marks.

The use of Microdermabrasion for scar reduction:

Microdermabrasion has been shown to be effective in reducing the appearance of skin marks; especially for those stubborn old white marks that do not seem to disappear with different cream formulations and various other treatment modalities.

Many microscopic studies have supported the fact that Microdermabrasion can help in reducing the appearance of stretch marks. The procedure can be performed in many beautician as well as plastic surgery clinics. Results are usually seen after 6 sessions of Microdermabrasion applied to the area where the marks are present. Many studies have also shown that with the use of high concentration Vitamin E & A creams, coupled with Microdermabrasion, cosmetic results are very impressive!

If you have stretch marks which you have been trying to get rid of for months or even years, look no further , for Microdermabrasion may be the answer to making those annoying marks memories of the past!

Microdermabrasion Concerns

December 27, 2009 by admin

Microdermabrasion is a ground-breaking beautifying treatment that very efficiently removes the upper layer of dead skin cells to reveal healthier skin below. It removes fine lines, wrinkles, scars and stretch marks and generally damaged skin. It can be done professionally at doctors clinics, spas and even at home, if you are experienced enough. Professional treatments can be quite costly and for a whole treatment regime can cost up to $1000-$2000 depending on where you live. In simple terms, tiny micro-crystals (e.g. aluminium oxide) are blasted onto the skin to remove the dead skin cells, and then a wand is used as a vacuum to clear them up right afterwards. Creams and special ointments can be used to supplement the procedure to make it more enjoyable. If you didnt already know, the procedure is painless and there are very few side-effects.

Some people question whether home microdermabrasion will cause more redness or soreness than professional microdermabrasion. The truth is that there will be slightly redder skin after home microdermabrasion, but this is purely because of the modified chemicals within the kit that are safe to be used at home. Make-up can easily be applied to cover this redness, and it will only take 1-2 days for your skin to return to normal.

Further, microdermabrasion is not only limited to the face (as many people falsely believe). You can use it on nearly any surface with skin on it. Knees, elbows, shoulders, your back, remember also that mothers can also use to remove stretch marks.

More people worry that their skin will start to scale off after the procedure. This is normal, there can also be redness after home microdermabrasion especially, so dont be alarmed. It is a side-effect of the sometimes incomplete abrading effect of the crystals that were used to remove the dead skin cells; some skin cells on the surface of your skin will continue to fall off, but only temporarily for a day or two after the procedure.

A final pressing issue is how much force one should I apply with a home system. Gentle force with circular motions over the specific area is the answer. It is not good to apply heavy pressure. Also, if you are someone with sensitive skin, test microdermabrasion on a small patch of skin before you carry out the whole procedure, just to make sure you are not allergic to the material.

Microdermabrasion Secrets-safe Wrinkle Skin Care for Anti-aging

December 26, 2009 by admin

Microdermabrasion and Micropeel™ are two of the most common anti-aging skin care methods in use today. However there are a vast number of microdermabrasion machines available and only a very few produce an effective peel and a visible result. More importantly the machines used in a doctor’s office are allowed to be stronger and more effective than machines sold to a spa or salon. Technicians who do microdermabrasion and Micropeel™ vary greatly in their skill and understanding of these techniques. Medical Aestheticians working in a physician’s office are specially trained and experienced. The fact that they work under the supervision of a doctor allows more effective treatments to be done. Your result is very dependent on how your peel is done and how good the medical aesthetician and her machine are. Below I will discuss how Microdermabrasion and Micropeel™ work, what they can achieve for you, the best machines, and how you can tell if you receive a good treatment.

How Microdermabrasion Works

Microdermabrasion is a deep exfoliation technique that removes dead and damaged skin cells from your face, neck and décolletage skin. After the treatment new fresh skin cells are revealed and the skin looks and feels smoother. Superficial skin pigment or brown spots will be lightened. Studies have shown that after repeated treatments fine wrinkles are improved, new collagen forms in the deeper skin layer called the dermis, and sun spots are gone or significantly lightened. There are significant facial rejuvenation and anti-aging skin care benefits:

Benefits

· Deep Exfoliation

· Removal of Sun Damage

· New Collagen Growth in Dermis

· Fine Wrinkle Removal

· Better Penetration of Retin A and Other Topical Agents

Technique

The technique uses a small glass tube with a hole on the side. A constant suction is passed through the tube by the machine and small sand like silica particles are passed through the glass tube by the machine.

As the tube is passed over your skin, the suction pulls your skin up into the stream of rushing silica particles and the passing particles abrade or remove dead skin cells that are dry, damaged and pigmented. This is exfoliation.

The Best Microdermabrasion Machines Are In a Doctor’s Office

Companies that make these machines are only allowed to sell de-powered units to salons and spas. These weaker machines just are not effective. If you want to see effective results you need to have your treatment by an experienced medical aesthetician in a doctor’s office.

We use the Megapeel™ machine. Dermagenesis™ is another good brand. Many machines just do not have enough power to provide adequate suction to abrade the skin.

There have been many new chemical machines which do not use the silica particles, but my patients prefer the standard original method using suction and silica particles.

How To Tell A If You’ve Had A Good Treatment

· Your skin will be pink or red

· Your skin will feel smooth

· Your skin will be slightly irritated

· You may have some skin peeling after a day or so

Micropeel™

Micropeel™ is a combination of dermaplaning (scraping dead and damaged skin cells off of the surface of your face with a scalpel) followed by the application of a dilute AHA (glycolic acid) solution to the skin. This is often called the “lunchtime peel” because the Micropeel™ can be done and you can usually return to work right after the peel. The Micropeel™ provides both mechanical (dermaplaning) and chemical skin peeling.

While this sounds more complex, the Micropeel™ is a gentler lighter peel. We use the Micropeel™ for:

· Dry Skin

· Sensitive Skin

· Patients with Rosacea

Salicylic Acid, which is stronger than dilute glycolic acid, can be used for an even deeper peel. When Salicylic Acid is used the technique is called Micropeel Plus™.

How Long Does A Treatment Take?

These treatments take about 30 minutes.

What Do These Treatments Cost?

Effective treatments with better machines and proper technique are done in a doctor’s office by an experienced medical aesthetician. They will be more expensive than those done in a salon or spa.

In Boston where I practice the following are typical costs:

Micropeel™-$70.00

Microdermabrasion-$125.00

Where Should I Have My Treatments Done?

The benefits of having these treatments by a medical aesthetician in a doctor’s office are:

· Medical Supervision

· Stronger, More Effective Treatments

· Access to Prescription Topical Medications

· Proper Safe Management if You Have A Problem

These are my favorite no down time non-surgical facial rejuvenation procedures. These deep exfoliation techniques plus topical Retin A and Vitamin C Serum are the foundation of anti-aging skin care for all of my patients. These techniques work, they are safe, effective and pleasant to experience. What could be a better way to start the anti-aging skin care process? It is never too early to start.
